Kirk Cluster
Description: The Kirk “cluster” of points includes several styles, or variants that are typically triangular corner-notched and serrated along the edges. Corner notches are generally narrow and U shaped with downward pointing shoulder barbs. Kirk points range from 1.5″ to over 5″ in length.
Distribution: Kirk corner notched points are one of the most commonly found point types across Illinois and Cook County. They are found in abundance across the Midwest and are particularly common in the Midsouth. This likely reflects are large growth in population during this time as populations settled in and flourished. The development of regional sub-styles or variants also reflects the increasing sense of social identity during this period.
Age: Kirk points are one of the most common Early Archaic period artifact and are well dated at multiple site to the 10,500-9,500 BP time period.
